It’s a beautiful day here in New England. The leaves are starting to change and it’s just cold enough to let you know that fall has arrived and winter is coming.
And there are 6 young men who won’t get to enjoy it. Six who recently took their own lives because they were bullied because of their sexuality.
And these are just the recent ones. There are more. Too many more. Too many who have been bullied and harassed for so long that they felt they had no options left.
Please pay attention to what’s going on around you. Do something if you hear of someone being bullied. Talk to each other and listen to each other. This needs to stop. This is something that needs to be paid attention to – to be taking seriously. Bulling needs to be made unacceptable and the bullies held accountable for their actions. No more brushing it off as kids being kids, no more “if you ignore them they’ll go away” – because they don’t go away. It continues because no one does anything about it and they know they’ll continue to get away with it.
If you need help there is the Trevor Project – a crisis and suicide prevention hot line for GLBT youths. There are people who will listen, and people who will love you for who you are.
